Buckquoy
Excavations at site HY 243282 revealed five superimposed farmsteads, along with numerous artifacts. The findings indicate the following phases of occupation:
• Phases I-II (Pictish, 7th to early 8th centuries): The structures from this period include a distinctive ‘figure-of-eight’ shaped house in Phase II.
• Phases III-V (Norse): These phases feature typically Norse house plans. The final occupation date is marked by a furnished burial in the ruins of the Phase V house, dating to the third quarter of the 10th century.
Evidence suggests a degree of social integration between the Picts and Norsemen. Substantial data on the environment and economy have been compiled into specialist reports. Among the small finds were a ring-headed pin, gaming boards, bone combs, and animal-headed pins.
