An Urnes Style die for producing decorated plates for a helmet was discovered in January 2023 by a metal detector user in a field near Watton, Norfolk.

The object is of bronze and would have had a thin sheet of metal pressed into it to reproduce the intricate design – a method known as repousse. The result would most likely been used to decorate a nose guard, or the cheek guards.

The find was reported to the local County Archaeologist.
