Jelling Runestones
The article discusses an investigation into Viking-Age runestones from Denmark, particularly those around Jelling. Three independent methods suggest that different rune-carvers worked in the area. The analysis links the Læborg stone to the Jelling complex, indicating that Thyra, mentioned on multiple stones, was likely a powerful figure of royal Jutlandic descent. Despite Gorm and Harald Bluetooth being mentioned on fewer stones, Thyra is highlighted as Denmark’s strength or salvation, suggesting significant status, land, and authority. The study challenges the traditional association of the larger north mound at Jelling with Gorm, suggesting Thyra’s more pivotal role in assembling the Danish realm. The analysis method, involving 3D-scanning, carving technique analysis, and rune and language forms, provides a new archaeological approach to studying power and patronage in societies with limited written sources.
