The peninsula of Deerness is on the eastern end of East Mainland, Orkney. At the north eastern tip of Deerness lies Mull Head. Immediately to the south of Mull Head is the Brough of Deerness, the site of an early medieval settlement.

Excavations on the Brough of Deerness confirmed that, in its latest phase at least, the settlement was probably the stronghold of a Viking chieftain, and that the settlement was as much a symbol of power and prestige as it was a stronghold.
